FC Barcelona star Defender, and face of Catalonia, Gerrard Pique Bernabeu is set to be in trouble after the second leg of the Copa Del Rey quarter-final match at Camp Nou. Not only him Barcelona’s evergreen CDM Sergio Busquets is also in trouble as the city rivals of FC Barcelona lodges complains against both of them for use of “unappropriate” chants against Espanyol.
According to Espanyol Pique insulted them by calling them “Espanyol de Cornella” while giving a post match interview. Cornella is the Barcelona suburb in which the Espanyol ground sits.
After the match, defender Pique said: “It isn’t that we suffered so much in this game, but Espanyol de Cornella always make it difficult for us.”
Asked why he referred to the rival club in that way, Pique replied: “Yes, Espanyol de Cornella, they are from Cornella right?”
Espanyol takes this remark as an example of mockery and racist chant because Espanyol identifies themselves as “Espanyol de Barcelona” and hence have asked the Spanish Football Federation’s anti violence committee to look into the matter.
They also didn’t take the remark of Sergio Busquets lightly.
In Cornella it was a more insane game,” the Spain midfielder said. “They celebrated in Cornella as if they had passed the round, but the tie lasts 180 minutes and we put things in their place.”
In relation to the comments of Sergio Busquets Espanyol put out a statement saying “In relation to the statements of Mr Busquets, it is inconceivable an athlete declares a rival cannot celebrate a victory, achieved with effort and in a fair fight, like the one that our team got in the first leg of the tie.
“We consider the declarations of Busquets can generate violence and intolerance.”
It is now on the anti violence committee to what steps they take ir whether they see this as a breach of decorum that needs to be dealt with remains to be seen.
